I was delighted to join Gifford Rolfe on bass for a few songs at Morley Folk Club near Leeds last week. I played on some songs from his last album, Between that Ocean and this Sky, and a couple from Dark Hearts and Strange Angels, including a favourite, his most covered song – you might know it – James Dean in the Rain. We had a really smashing night. It was brilliant to see Gifford play a full set of his superb songs. His songwriting and showmanship really stands out, I love his songs of northern England – his dark stories of real life people and places and of course his fabulous Wild West tales. Gifford was joined by Joan Foye for a song in the second set and a selection of floor singers opened the evening. What a lovely night.
