The North Mississippi Allstars tore it up at Manchester’s Ruby Lounge last week, one of only a handful of UK shows as part of their Prayer for Peace world tour. Sons of legendary Memphis record producer Jim Dickinson, Luther and Cody are the heart of the best hill country blues boogie band on the planet – superb instrumentalists and stacks of amazing tunes.
This time around the Dickinson brothers were joined by the cool and groovy Brady Blade and social activist pastor, Rev. Sekou who guested on vocals for a couple of full on southern soul songs – imagine a slick dreadlocked Joe Cocker intensity. Luther – mainly on guitar and Cody – mainly drums and keyboard swapped vocals and treated the packed house to a storming set of rollin’ and tumblin’ North Mississippi hill country blues old and new. Our gig of the year for sure.
