There and Back

‘There and Back’ is Lou Duffy-Howard’s first solo video album of eleven experimental railway journey inspired songs, soundscapes and visuals. It is released on the DHM record label on November 15th 2024 catalogue number DHM036 on all the usual digital platforms and on Bandcamp now.

The album is a combination of songs, spoken word, instrumentals and soundscapes illuminating a series of railway journeys mostly in Lou’s home county of East Yorkshire, UK. Each track is the same length, under 3 minutes long, yet each track is experimental in a different way, both music and visually. The tracks flow from one to the next, but each one tells its own story with a temperament of its own.

Lou explained: “I manipulated the videos of the journeys and used them to inspire the music and songs. I used samples of the sounds of the train to integrate into the music. Here are two examples of the videos. First up, the video for ‘Night Train out of Paragon’. As I was on the train departing Hull’s Paragon station at twilight a woman was leaving her relationship, hoping to start a new life away from trouble, and the spoken word story came to life.” 

This is ‘Another Train Comes Anyway’. For this track I wanted to tell the story of the journey using words that sound familiar and tell the tale, but aren’t real words or sentences in the English language. Like the video, it’s real but not completely lifelike. For the video Rich and I travelled from Thorne to Saltmarshe, via the twin water towers in Goole known as the salt and pepper pots.”

Lou was originally in recently reformed prophetic UK Indie band Red Guitars and has gigged and recorded ever since, currently heading up psychedelic rock band Loudhailer Electric Company.
