Who believes in ghosts? The Open Bridges River Hull memory sharing morning at Hull Maritime Museum last weekend was enlightening, moving and entertaining. In between stories of life on the River Hull former River Man Neville Pinder shared his ghost stories with us…

Neville made the Hull Daily Mail in 1958 with his rafting escapades on the River Hull when he was a boy. More about that soon…

The idea for A River Full Of Stories came about when many of the 2000 visitors to the Open Bridges exhibition inside Scale Lane Bridge told us fascinating stories and memories of their lives working on and around the river.  We wanted to capture these memories and stories and share them with future generations. With the support of the Heritage Lottery Fund, we will produce a film, exhibition, website and book.

Open Bridges Summer Solstice ‘Moments in Time’ Live Performance

Friends, would you like to come to the special summer solstice live performance of the Open Bridges music? It’s a quadraphonic 20 minute performance of the musique concrete soundtrack by the composer John Stead to accompany the film at Beverley Treasure House and Art Gallery, East Yorkshire, Thursday, 21 June, at 6.30 pm for 7.00 pm start. It will be over before 8pm. It’s an informal occasion, to gather and enjoy the music in the gallery space – and a chance to hear the musique concrete which accompanies the beautiful Open Bridges film, very different and atmospheric. Free entry, but it would be helpful if you’d let us know if you’d like to come.

There will be a live quadraphonic performance of the Open Bridges music – ‘Moments in Time’ – by the composer John Stead to accompany the Open Bridges film at Beverley Treasure House and Art Gallery, East Riding of Yorkshire, on Thursday, 21 June, at 6.30 pm for 7.00 pm start. The event will be finished by 8 o’clock and is free of charge. It is an informal occasion, just to gather and enjoy the music in the gallery space.

BAFTA winning composer John Stead will diffuse the especially commissioned musique concrete work – recorded using natural sounds to form a montage – to accompany the film, which has been showing in Beverley Art Gallery this month. John recorded and included sounds from the River Hull’s journey from Beverley to Hull, including the sounds of the bridges moving.

Open Bridges Exhibition Notes #1

Photos and observations from our day at the Open Bridges exhibition yesterday. There’s been a lot of questions about the “Engines and Insects” art photography part of the exhibition. The images follow the photographer Horst P Horst who first published the technique in Patterns from Nature in 1946. Rich created them digitally using basic darkroom techniques, not an app – the pictures are as hand made as they can be!

Open Bridges

We’ve had many visitors to the Open Bridges exhibition at Scale Lane Bridge and many fascinating conversations with local people who’ve worked the river for years as well as  visitors from out of town. One of the recurring themes is the importance and the beauty of the river Hull from different perspectives such as “it’s special because it’s untouched and industrial” to “why do we name our city after a river we care so little about?” One of the team members who closed Myton Bridge to traffic on the Open Bridges night visited and said he’d met people on Myton when the city split in two who spoke emotionally of the importance and meaning the event had for them.
