A River Full of Stories, book launch

It was a special day on Saturday when the culmination of Open Bridges ‘A River Full of Stories’ book was launched at Hull Maritime Museum Hull: Yorkshire’s Maritime City. It was marvellous that there were so many people there who have contributed stories and photographs to the book. It was a whirlwind for us and went by in a flash, so thank you to everyone who took photographs during the afternoon so we know what went on! Open Bridges Exhibition Notes #1

Photos and observations from our day at the Open Bridges exhibition yesterday. There’s been a lot of questions about the “Engines and Insects” art photography part of the exhibition. The images follow the photographer Horst P Horst who first published the technique in Patterns from Nature in 1946. Rich created them digitally using basic darkroom techniques, not an app – the pictures are as hand made as they can be!

Open Bridges

We’ve had many visitors to the Open Bridges exhibition at Scale Lane Bridge and many fascinating conversations with local people who’ve worked the river for years as well as  visitors from out of town. One of the recurring themes is the importance and the beauty of the river Hull from different perspectives such as “it’s special because it’s untouched and industrial” to “why do we name our city after a river we care so little about?” One of the team members who closed Myton Bridge to traffic on the Open Bridges night visited and said he’d met people on Myton when the city split in two who spoke emotionally of the importance and meaning the event had for them.

Scale Lane Bridge
The exhibition covers all elements of Open Bridges and art photography exhibition of Open Bridges images inspired by Horst P Horst Patterns From Nature – ‘Engines and Insects’.
Open Bridges made history when for the first time all 13 of the bridges over the River Hull raised, swung or closed simultaneously splitting the city of Hull in two at 20:17 hours on 22nd September 2017 during Hull City of Culture’s Freedom Season.
The idea of Rich & Lou Duffy-Howard, Open Bridges was a logistical first and was the culmination of 18 months of meticulous planning and preparation. Delivered by an all Hull based team to manage the different elements, Open Bridges…

Open Bridges Hull – excerpts of Moments in Time, the world premiere of the live musique concrete diffusion for Open Bridges by John Stead. Autumn equinox 2017

A ghostly view of the world premiere of the new acousmatic composition for Open Bridges. Electro Acoustic Ensemble director, John diffused the live music featuring found sounds of Hull bridges in octophonic sound to a full house at Hull’s Stage@TheDock, where the River Hull meets the Humber Estuary, in the shadow of the iconic buildings, The Deep, The Tidal Barrier, Millennium Bridge and the C4Di building. For the first time in the city’s history all 13 of Hull’s bridges raised, swung or closed simultaneously, splitting the city in two at 20:17 hours on the autumnal equinox 2017 during Hull City of Culture’s Freedom Season. Thanks to Simon Coope for his phone video clip, Graeme Oxby for the cover photo, and Phil Codd for…
